What does a jump in notrump by opener mean? It may seem obvious, but many 2/1 partnerships fail to address this topic beforehand. There are two schools of thought on this matter.

One is that opener is advertising a strong balanced hand, just as he would if he rebid 2NT after a one-level response. Other pairs decide to apply the “fast arrival” principle and use the immediate 3NT as showing a minimum hand, and could even be unbalanced with shortness in responder’s suit.

I’m not going to lavish you with my opinion on this sequence because I don’t feel that strongly about it. It’s very important, however, that you talk about it with partner to make absolutely certain that you’re both on the same page.
